Friday's Show 6/9/06

Been forgetting to mention that my shows are on KRBS, Listener and Community supported radio (also-www.radiobirdstreet.org) "Coffee and Cigarettes" is on Friday morning 10:am-11:30am with music - some obscure but all good music. This Friday I'll be playing tracks from Ben Harper's cd, "Diamond on the Inside" and from Canyon Records' new cd, "American Indians Play Waila"....this is a wonderful cd - takes me back to my childhood in L.A. and from 11:30am-12:noon, I'll be talking about TV & Films...fun!
So, what's up with "The Sopranos"? I think "Entourage" is taking over. JMHO. I'll also be talking about "The Breakup" it's Vince Vaughn's movie...."The World's Fastest Indian" and "Bobby". There will be more info.

Celeb Sightings: Leon Russell's tour bus in Oroville on Monday & Tuesday following his performance Sunday evening in Marysville. What was Leon doing still in Oroville?! Hmmmmmm Anyone know? Let me know!
So that's the outline for Friday's show. Stay tuned.......
Thanks!

One More Time

Saturday night and nothing better to do than make sure I can log back in....and out! Looks like I can. Been listening to some lovely music on Canyon Records i.e., "American Indians Play Waila"....all instrumental including accordians! Almost like polka rhythms, but more Indian/Mex music. I was born in LA and, it seems, when I was a little girl I heard a lot of this music when my family took me to restaurants, etc. So spirited and fun. Nothing better than unexpected flashbacks to your childhood -

Also listened to a good cd by Bill Sheffield, just good ol' guitar playing and singing songs that mean something.....wish I had listened to this before I went out and splurged on a Ben Harper cd, "Diamonds on the Inside"....Harper has a marvelous voice and knows how to use it - wish his producers knew how! The cd was very uneven and seems Harper didn't have a "voice" in the production of this one. Hopefully, his recent cds are better. Back to the rattlesnakes!

Good evening! Finally had the nerve to return! Want to talk about my show this morning,"Coffee and Cigarettes"...because I liked it. I played a single by Willy DeVille, "Jesse James" which is terrific - sounds like it's 3:am in NYC -is there a better sound anywhere else? Then followed with ol' LeonRedbone singing "Polly Wolly Doodle" and a lovely song by Eric Bibb and Michael Jerome Brown, "Just Look Up"....these 2 tracks are from the Putumayo for Kids cd,"Folk Playground" So great to "discover" good music - Putumayo is the most reliable label to KNOW you're going to find some good stuff. I played my usual Dylan, Alvin "Youngblood" Hart, and my favorite "rattlesnakes".....I have a friend in Berlin who sent me an email saying she finally found the link to my fave male singers - they all sound as tho they'v eaten rattlesnakes for breakfast!? Wow..I thought it was having soul after all these years!

"ReelTalking"turned out well - I'm always nervous thinking I don't have anything to talk about, but something takes over and I'm racing the clock to take a deep breath by 12:noon. I talked about Phillip Seymore Hoffman's brilliant film, "Love Liza" about a husband whose wife committed suicide.....and left a note! How do you live with those 2 things? He was tormented by the sealed note not knowing if he should read it. He became addicted to sniffing gasoline......this is an excellent film. It's on DVD - a caller,"Carol" called to ask the name of the film again telling me how much she enjoys the show! Love those calls. Well, lookslike I'm going to run out of space, but thanks for reading and please leave a (good) comment! Thanks, Sue
